“Justicia” y/o “rectitud”: Un análisis contextual de sedeq en la RVR (español) y la KJV (inglés)

La Versión Reina Valera Revisada (RVR) generalmente traduce sedeq como “justicia”, pero la King James Version (KJV) en inglés normalmente opta por “rectitud”, y muy pocas veces por “justicia”. “Justicia” capta mejor la dimensión comunal del término hebreo.
En cambio, “rectitud” abre la puerta para una religión individualista, centrada en la santidad personal. La traducción de la KJV ha contribuido a fomentar un cristianismo individualista no sólo en el mundo de habla inglesa, sino también en América Latina,
donde muchos misioneros, condicionados por la KJV, han interpretado la palabra “justicia” en la RVR como una referencia a la rectitud personal.
The Spanish Versión Reina Valera Revisada (RVR) generally translates sedeq as “justice”, whereas the King James Version (KJV) nomally opts for “righteousness”, and rarely for “justice”. “Justice” better captures the communal dimension of the Hebrew term. “Righteousness”, on the other hand, opens the door for an individualistic religion, centered in personal holiness. The KJV translation has helped foment an individualistic Christianity not only in the English-speaking world, but also in Latin America, where missionaries, conditioned by the KJV, have interpreted the word “justice” in the RVR as a reference to personal righteousness.

La historicidad del texto y el papel del texto en la interpretación poética

La interpretación poética con frecuencia resulta ahistórica. Sin embargo, como la narrativa bíblica exhibe tres impulsos básicos—el teológico, el histórico y el literario—, una interpretación poética debe leerla en relación simbiótica con una investigación histórica. Así, tendría menos riesgo de reducir el texto a literatura pura o excesivamente histórica y teológica, y también tendría mayor oportunidad de explorar el mensaje persuasivo y transformador del texto. Algunas escuelas literarias subrayan sólo el papel del lector en la determinación del significado del texto. Si bien el lector es una fuerza positiva y decisiva en esa tarea, el texto debe tener un lugar prioritario. Una hermenéutica espiral en diálogo dialéctico con el texto es determinante para que el texto, no las precomprensiones, guíen el proceso de lectura.
Poetic interpretation is frequently ahistorical. However, since biblical narrative manifests three basic impulses—theological, historical, and literary—, poetic interpretation should read it in symbiotic relation-ship with historical research. The interpretation will thus run less risk of reducing the text to pure literature or excessively historical or theological writings. It will also have a greater opportunity to explore the text’s persuasive and transforming message. Some literary schools emphasize only the role of the reader in the determination of the text’s meaning. Although the reader is a positive and decisive force in this task, the text must have priority. A spiraled hermeneutic in dialectical dialogue with the text is critical so that the text, and not the reader’s preunderstandings, guides the reading process.
